One of the more important parts of the college application process is applying for financial aid. Now more than ever it is important to find sources of money that will help you pay for college.

by Ron Cleaver

One of the more important parts of the college application process is applying for financial aid. Now more than ever it is important to find sources of money that will help you pay for college.

Any money you get from somewhere else to pay for college tuition can be considered financial aid. This includes government loans, private student loans from a bank like Citibank, scholarships based on merit, or grants.

The most important distinction between the options of financial aid are those sources of funding that have to be paid back such as loans and those that are given with no repayment needed such as most grants and scholarships. Regardless of which category you are targeting you must be aware that there are rules and requirements as part of the application process.

It is very difficult to get funding that can cover your entire college funding needs. Often you can combine several scholarships and cover most of your financial requirements through various sources. This is why it is so important to apply for as many scholarships as you think you might qualify for. You can find out which scholarships meet your needs and you might qualify for at by doing some internet research and following the suggestions below.

We have put together eight points that will help you get organized and get those scholarships you need to fund college:

1. Most high school programs have a college counselor to help you identify which scholarships you might qualify for. Make sure you ask for any scholarship booklets that the school can provide or that colleges have sent you your high school.

2. You should take the list of colleges you want to apply to and call each one. You should request the financial aid office and then ask them to send you a scholarship booklet if they have one.

3. Unfortunately the online resources for scholarships are very slim and often are a bit deceiving. Make sure that if the website you are reviewing asks for you information, you know where that information is going. The best sites will send it directly to the organization offering the scholarship. You should use government resources like: students.gov

4. Most applications for scholarships are competitive. You should review the rules and criteria for awards prior to starting the application. Make sure those essays highlight the points that the granting organization is looking for.

5. Some essays are very challenging and may take a lot of time to complete, don’t let this discourage you. Some of the toughest scholarships to apply for may also be some with the fewest applications.

6. You’re not the first one to apply for a scholarship. Utilize resources that are available to you. Each university has entire departments filled with dozens of people that specifically help prospective students attend their university. Do not be afraid to ask for help.

7. Most scholarship applications are looking for information from people who know you. They often request letters of recommendation. You should get these in order as you complete jobs or are about to leave an internship. When people have you fresh in their minds they will usually be able to write something quickly so you can get all of your applications in on time.

8. Start early and keep at it. The earlier you start the more likely you are to be able to apply for more scholarships and also the more time you have to research and write your essays.

Getting money to pay for school can often be one of the most stressful parts of the college application process. If you follow the tips above you will have a better likelihood of succeeding and getting the money you need.

Congrats on taking the next step in reaching your education goals and good luck in getting the money you need to get that college degree.
