How much does is cost to extract aluminium from the ground?

Rhian C asked:

I need to know this because I have to do research on it for my Chemistry lesson tomorrow.
I need to know why it costs so much and what we can do to reduce the costs.
Thank you!

The site I’ve linked should help, unless you’ve already had your class on this topic.

This isn’t the best place for research though, in the future. Try typing your queries into Google or Wikipedia. Or even go to the library for a book.

Researching properly is much more helpful.

Well, aluminum is never mined directly from pure deposits found in nature, rather it is extracted from bauxite ore found as a mineral deposit using vast amounts of electricity in the reduction process to obtain pure metallic aluminum we all recognize from it’s many uses. There entails the high cost factor in producing aluminum, high electricity costs make processing bauxite a costly venture when compared to using recycled aluminum collected from our waste stream which uses only a fraction of the energy, and there for a fraction of the cost of making metallic aluminum from bauxite ore. The Bauxite ore, converted using the Alcoa process is most often found in close proximity to large electrical generating plants to minimize transmission losses as would happen if long distances would be traversed by power lines and their resulting electrical losses, and therefor even higher costs associated with aluminum production. Did you know the Washington Monument obelisk in D.C. Was topped with a small cap of some of the first aluminum produced then because of it’s exotic new rust proof properties and was at that time more expensive than Gold per pound
